    Textbook FAQs

    Frequently Asked Questions for Textbooks:

    Purchasing and Registering

FAQ: I wish to purchase the software and electronic textbook by check, but I've lost track of the relevant information to do so. How should it be made out and where do I send it?

Answer: We accept checks or money orders as payment, but you also need to be sure you have registered for your course by starting at the On-Line Purchase link, either from here or from our home page. It is at the end of this registration process that you normally received information about where to go for on-line purchase and/or the amount and address for check payment. If you have already registered, and wish only the check payment infomation, attend to the following details very carefully, as we sell more than one item:

    1. If you are buying Kasschau's Psychology: Exploring Behavior introductory psychology textbook, make out your check or money order for $95.00 to (AI)2, Inc.

    2. If you are buying CyberRat WITHOUT the Learning Tutorials, make out your check or money order for $20.00 to (AI)2, Inc.

    3. If you are buying CyberRat WITH the Learning Tutorials, make out your check or money order for $40.00 to (AI)2, Inc.

In all cases mail your check or money order to us at:

    (AI)2, Inc.

    PO Box 2963

    Winter Park, FL 32790-2963

FAQ: When will you send my purchased product?

Answer: If you have purchased a textbook and software package, we state very emphatically on our Limitations and Terms of Agreement page that begins your on-line registration no product is shipped or mailed to you. The electronic textbook is ONLY Downloadable software that electronically delivers our text, tutoring, and certification testing services. You may find the version designed for your operating system by starting at our Downloads page. In addition, you may also download pdf file versions suitable for printing from our Downloads pages.

If you purchased a CyberRat CD, this product is too large to download, so we mail a CD-ROM to you no later than the next business day following your purchase.

FAQ: When I try to buy the software/program online, the web site won't let me add anything to my shopping cart. How do I get what I need?

Answer: First, try using the REFRESH button on your browser to make sure you are loading the latest page from that address. But, from time-to-time the vendor we use for our secure on-line e-commerce sales (Verio) will experience server overloads or other outages over which we have no control. Usually, if you return to the store within a few minutes, you will find the problem resolved, thus letting you conduct your purchase normally. As an alternative, we always accept checks or money orders for $95.00 that are made out to: (AI)2, Inc. and mailed to that company at:

    (AI)2, Inc.

    PO Box 2963

    Winter Park, FL 32790-2963

FAQ: I bought the software at my bookstore, but I've lost my registration and/or serial number. Do I need a new one? Can I access it somewhere?

Answer: Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do about lost proof-of-purchase information, such as serial numbers or sales receipts. We have no way of retrieving information that was not in our possession and cannot honor critical information that cannot be verified.

FAQ: I bought the program at my college/university bookstore, but I accidentally signed up for an online copy. How do I cancel the online order?

Answer: This creates two database records if you attempt to register a second time. Please report such an event to techsupport@psych-ai.com with detailed information as to what you have done and what you need. They will help you resolve your problem.

FAQ: While I was registering online, I signed up with the wrong ID number or for the wrong section of my psychology course. How do I change my ID or get moved to the correct section?

Answer: Changing Log-in ID numbers and, if the instructor allows it, section assignment is avaliable through the Personal Data selection option in the Services Menu on the Frontispiece (the cover that shows the book's title) of your textbook. When you use this selection, a panel showing registered personal data appears and any editable fields will be available in that panel. A button to "Save" any edited material must be used to re-register your changes. Alternatively, you may contact techsupport@psych-ai.com and ask us to make any requested changes that aren't available for self-correction. In this case be sure to include your name, school, and log-in ID number as well as the correction information.

FAQ: Is there any way to edit my personal information (name, phone number, etc.) in the system?

Answer: You may contact techsupport@psych-ai.com and ask us to make any requested changes that aren't available for self-correction. Be sure to include your name, school, and log-in ID number as well as the correction information. You should not merely re-register as this creates problems involving duplicated registration records.

    Installation and Multiple Copies

FAQ: Can I keep all of the textbook's content on my own computer's Hard Drive or do I have to download it every time I need it?

Answer: When you download the PAILite package there is no real textbook content contained in it. However, you have the option of caching all downloaded content as you access it. To do this, use the "Services" menu on the Frontispiece of your textbook to set the "cache" setting to "on." You may also use the "Downloads" selection of your "Services" menu on the Frontispiece of your textbook to pre-cache an entire chapter at a time.

FAQ: How do I download multiple copies of the program (so I can use it on more than one computer) or, if I aborted my first attempt at downloading, how do I start downloading again?

Answer: Once you have purchased the software, there is no limit on how many copies of the program you can download. If you have already registered, DO NOT re-register. All you need to do to download new copies at any time is to go to the Downloads link at the psych-ai website and then click the subsequent link appropriate for your computer's operating system (Windows or Macintosh). To add the program to a new/different computer, simply repeat this download process on that computer. Remember, you should register before you download the first time (and only the first time). Once you have registered, you only need to revisit the "downloads" page in order to obtain the program as many times as needed.

FAQ: I downloaded the software, but now I can't find it on my computer. Where did it go? Do I have to start the download process over again?

Answer: This problem typically only exists on Windows operating systems, so the following applies to Windows users only. On your computer, double click the "My Computer" icon. Next, click on the C:-drive icon. Look for a folder named PsychAI (if this is showing, double click it. Then double click the "open book" icon. This will bring you to the online login page and then the online textbook, tutoring services etc.) If you do not see this folder, use your system-wide "Find" to locate the folder called PsychAI. If it is not found, you probably re-directed where you wanted to progarm to be saved during the unzip installation and lost the folder default name, which spreads the contents all over your selected destination rather than putting it all into a folder called "PsychAI". To solve this problem, you need to start the unzip/installation process over again by double clicking on PAILite.exe (if you deleted this, download a new copy, see above FAQ for downloading additional copies). If repeating the download process does not resolve the problem, email/contact techsupport@psych-ai.com with as much detail as possible of what you did during the download and registration process. Be sure to include your name, login ID (usually your student ID), instructor and section.

Opening your Textbook and Logging In

FAQ: I have a copy of the PsychAI folder on my computer, but when I double click the "Openbook" application icon, the program looks like it is opening and then just crashes or opens and disappears. What is happening?

Answer: You have an old copy of our software on your computer and need to replace it with a current version. First, trash/recycle the entire "PsychAI" folder to delete it from your computer. Do the same with the PAILite.exe application if you still have it on your computer. Next, download/install a current version of the textbook (see above FAQ on Downloading new or multiple copies). Try to access the online textbook again. If this doesn't work, email/contact techsupport@psych-ai.com and be sure to include your name, login ID (usually your student ID), instructor and section. Please give a detailed description of the problem and what you did during the registration/download process so that we can better assist you.

FAQ: When I use the Openbook application to start, I get to the log-in screen where I must type my LogIn ID number, but then it never seems to log-in to the server or it doesn't recognize my number. What can be wrong?

Answer: There are several possible answers to this question, and it is useful to know about each possibility.

    Possibility 1:

First of all, before using this product, you MUST be registered as a student via the (AI)2, Inc. web site (www.psych-ai.com). Registration places you into our database of possible users. If you purchased your license at the University bookstore, you must register at www.psych-registration.com . If you have not yet done so, or you have made an error (such as the wrong digits in your ID number), then you will experience the problem described. Contact us via e-mail at techsupport@psych-ai.com with your proper Name, ID, Course, University, and Section and we can check if you were properly registered.

    Possibility 2:

If your computer is configured to auto-recognize calls for TCP/IP connections to the internet, this program will auto-launch to connect with the internet. It will NOT, however, close the connection when you Quit/Exit a session. Failure of the Openbook launching application to make a call to your internet service provider (ISP) may indicate that your configuration is not set to auto-recognize a connection request to your modem. In any case, we strongly recommend that you launch your normal internet connection panel and connect to the internet, then leave your connection panel running in the background while you launch your textbook application.

ATTENTION AOL./Compuserve Subscribers: Launching your web-browser, going to our www-psych-ai.com web site, and leaving your browser running in the background MAY BE REQUIRED, since AOL isn't a direct connection to the internet, but is, rather, only an intermediate link to AOL services.

    Possibility 3:

It is rare, but servers do occasionally crash. Our servers are all with third-party vendors from whom we rent services. They have highly reliable networks and offer the fastest maintenance time available. Nevertheless, we monitor their services by acting as users just like you, and we are very sensitive to service failures. If you absolutely can't connect, it may be that the servers are actually down and won't return to service for anything from a few minutes to several hours (just like your electrical power service to your home when things happen somewhere in the distribution system). Be patient and try again later. If it persists, it is unlikely to be a server and you should check with your instructor's provided tech-support for advice.

FAQ: What do I do when I constantly get a "server down" message when I am trying to log onto the system?

Answer: Try logging on again in 5-60 minutes. Our servers are operational 99.9% of the time, but as with all servers, they do go down occasionally. We have auto-ping services to automatically check and restart systems should they be capable of reboots, but sometimes the internet gateways or even the backbone is at fault and we can do nothing about it. Feel free to submit a note of service failure (no more than one in 24 hours please) to techsupport@psych-ai.com in case we are somehow unaware of the outtage.

FAQ: I've logged in many time before and usually don't have a problem, now the system says I'm an "Unregistered User" because my LogIn ID is not in the database! What happened?

Answer:There are two possibilities for this:

    1. One is the result of recent updates to Norton Firewall applications that alter our server calls in your textbook software. To resolve this you should contact techsupport@psych-ai.com so they can work with you in using some built-in diagnostics that can determine if this is your problem and thus provide you with proper solutions.

    2. Alternatively, we have on rare occasions experienced a very unusual problem where our server is up and running properly but the database application 'hangs'. This allows you to connect to the server and receive your input screen without any problem, but when you attempt to submit your Login ID number, it searches for your record in our database and can't find this record because the database isn't actually running. We constantly monitor the database with a software monitoring system and thus catch this event within 4-6 minutes of its occurrence. So try again in about 10-15 minutes.

    Printing

FAQ: How can I print this (or any other) web page so I can prop it up next to my computer to follow as I work?

Answer: Go to your web browser's FILE menu, pull down to "Save as..." and when asked, find the location where you will easily find the copy that is about to be saved. Then, open your favorite word processor program (say MSWord or WordPerfect), go to its FILE menu and select OPEN and find the file you just saved. After it opens up in your word processor, got to your word processor's FILE menu and select PRINT. That's it!

FAQ: How can I print out the text in my Psychology textbook?

Answer: We have a page on this web site where we post downloadable and printable pdf files. To access this page CLICK HERE

Using Adobe Acrobat Reader (which is a standard helper application for most web browsers), open any given chapter's 'pdf' file to view and/or print that chapter in fully formatted and graphically illustrated format. If you attempt to open these files and are told that you do not have Adobe's Acrobat Reader, it is a free download from Adobe.

Other tech support information on pdf files:

IF White space displays instead of a PDF file

    1. You may have an old copy of Acrobat Reader. Please download the latest version of Acrobat from their web site (linked above).

    2. If you have Internet Explorer 3.0

Internet Explorer 3.0 may display white space where it should display a PDF file. This can occur if Internet Explorer has an old or bad copy of the PDF file in its cache. You may be able to correct the problem by clearing its cache as follows:

    1. In Internet Explorer, choose View > Options and click the Advanced tab.

    2. Click Settings in the Temporary Internet files section.

    3. Click Empty Folder.

    4. Click Yes and OK until you close all the dialog boxes.

    5. Click the Refresh button or choose View-- Refresh to redisplay the PDF file

FAQ: What can I do if my Adobe Acrobat Reader can't read the PDF files or says they are damaged?

Answer: You probably need to update your version of Acrobat Reader, as our pdf files were made in a relatively recent version of Acrobat (take me to Adobe). If that doesn't work, you may download printable rtf (no graphics) versions of each chapter using the Frontispiece's ìServicesî menu to access "Downloads" immediately after you have logged in with your ID.

    Access and Connections

FAQ: What can I do if my connection is constantly dropped while I am working online?

Answer: Make sure your internet connection panel or browser doesn't have its preferences set to disconnect you after a few minutes of inactivity. Also, while Psych-ai software relies upon your internet connections, it does nothing to make such connections more or less stable. This is the responsibility of your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and you should contact their tech-support for clarification as to why your internet connections are unreliable (often a product of noisy telephone lines).

FAQ:How do I access certification exams, the tutor system, bonus quizzes, etc.?

Answer: Please read our on-line User's Guide linked from our home page for a thorough description of how to use the features of the program.

FAQ: What do I do if the system or my computer will not allow me to access the tutoring system?

Answer: If you have been tutoring with success, you may find the adaptive tutoring system shifting you to a state called "Probe" which doesn't appear to be tutoring at all until you move to a new topic. You cannot reset this state except by failing, as the system has determined that you do not need high-density tutoring for learning the material. Alternatively, you may have inadvertently switched from the "Full Text" level of presentation to either "Notes" or "Outline" forms of text presentation. On these levels (changed by using the upper far-left button while in "browse" user mode) there are no tutoring services available. We strongly suggest you consult the User's Guide to review correct procedures for each desired action. Then if it doesn't work, describe very precisely what you did and the unexpected result of that in a request to techsupport@psych-ai.com

FAQ: My tutor questions, quizzes, or certification exams come up blank when I try to access them. What can I do?

Answer: This only happens when there is a critical error in the questions database. Please report such an event to techsupport@psych-ai.com with detailed information as to the nature of the problem and the topic and title of the chapter you were attempting to tutor, quiz, or certify.

FAQ: The system stalls and my computer often freezes when I try to access certification exams. How do I correct this so I can take an exam before the deadline?

Answer: You probably have an old copy of our software on your computer. First, trash/recycle the entire PsychAI folder from your computer (delete it entirely). Next, download/install a current version of the textbook. Try accessing the certification exams again. If this doesn't work, email/contact techsupport@psych-ai.com and include a detailed description of the problem as well as your name, login ID (usually your student ID), instructor and section.

FAQ: How can deadlines be reopened so I can take a certification exam that was unavailable due to system problems?

Answer: Only instructors have the ability to alter any of the system's settings for their respective students. The system allows them to make exception settings for individual students with needs for such alterations should the instructor deem it appropriate. Please email/contact your instructor about this issue and be sure to include detailed information as to the nature of your problem.

FAQ: I have a certified learning disability or other impairment that makes it difficult to type/use a computer. How can I get more time to answer questions?

Answer: Only instructors have the ability to alter any of the system's settings for their respective students. The system allows them to make exception settings for individual students with certified needs for such alterations should the instructor deem it appropriate. Please email/contact your instructor about this issue and be sure to include detailed information as to the nature of your problem.

    Dropping the Course, Refunds,

or Extending into a New Semester

FAQ: How do I get a refund if I drop the course?

Answer: Bookstore returns must be made by returning a signed copy of the license and the purchase receipt within 30 days of purchase. We reimburse the bookstore, not students directly. For On-Line and Check purchases, the first page of our on-line registration states terms of agreement and understanding that include our return policy. You may request on-line or check-by-mail purchase returns by notifying us by e-mail at sales@psych-ai.com of your dropping the course. Be sure to include your name, student ID, professor's name, and school/section information. Both check and on-line purchases are charged $10 for credit handling costs and are made only if we are notified within 30 days of purchase.

FAQ: How do I get reinstated if I still have a valid purchase but abandoned the course or took an Incoplete in a previous semester and am retaking it or making up an incomplete?

Answer: We archive all student records at the end of each semester and then purge them from our database. To start a new semester using prior payment (and ONLY if you did not receive a refund), you may use our "OnLine Purchase" links starting from our home page to register for the new semester. At the completion of this new registration, instead of making a purchase, e-mail us at sales@psych-ai.com with your complete information regarding name, ID, school, prior section, instructor, and term of last registration so we can search our archive to verify and repost your purchase information. We will then notify you when this process is complete. You may, however, begin using services as soon as you register for the new term and download the latest version of our software.
